ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS AT CYRRHUS NEBI HOURI
RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION
Since 2008 the Balamand university has invested fundes to study the Pillars Basilica of Cyrrhus. This project is under the direction of Nadine Panayot-Haroun.This building is being excavated and studied, it will soon be presented to the public. The apse of the basilica is of a square shape facing the east. In the north side of the edifice, many thresholds were revealed. The narthex is located on the western side. The Byzantine basilica was installed on previous Roman monuments: at least two levels of flooring covered with mosaics were discovered, unfortunately completely looted. At a later period, after it was abandoned the building appears to have been occupied by presses. In the Islamic period, it is quite possible also that the old church was re-used as a mosque. Current researches focus on understanding the various transformations and specify the chronology of occupations.
